Fire & EMS

Annual physicals for departments that have to document them

Members cleared, tested, and on the roster — with reporting a chief can hand to a council, a grant reviewer, or an insurer.

Compliance

The standards this work falls under

These are the federal standards that most commonly drive exam requirements for this sector. Your own exposure assessment and client contracts decide which apply to a given classification.

Respiratory protection (SCBA)29 CFR 1910.134Clearance before first use; fit test annually
Hearing conservation29 CFR 1910.95Baseline at entry, then annually

Protocol

What an annual member physical covers

Departments differ in what they have adopted and what their funding requires. This is the common core; tell us what your department has committed to and we will build the protocol to it.

Comprehensive physical examinationHistory, vitals, and a physical exam appropriate to the demands of fire and EMS work.
Annual
Vision and hearingVision screening and audiometry with comparison against the member's own baseline.
1910.95
Pulmonary function testingSpirometry, interpreted and compared to prior results rather than filed unread.
Surveillance
Respirator medical clearance and fit testSCBA clearance and fit testing by make, model, and size, completed in the same visit.
1910.134
Laboratory work and EKG as indicatedOrdered to the department's protocol and the member's clinical picture.
As indicated
Immunizations and titersHepatitis B and tetanus among others, with titers where the department wants them documented.
1910.1030

Before you rely on this for an NFPA 1582 program: departments adopt NFPA 1582 to differing degrees, and a full 1582 program includes an essential-job-task fitness determination and a medical-category clearance letter beyond the exam elements above. Tell us what your department has adopted and what your authority having jurisdiction expects, and we will confirm in writing what MedCare does and does not provide against it before you commit.

How we work

Scheduling a whole department

Shift schedules do not bend around clinic hours. We block time for a department rather than making members book one at a time, and we can come to the station.

  • Block scheduling around shift rotations
  • On-site testing at the station
  • Saturday morning appointments available
  • Consistent reporting format for every member
  • Bilingual staff
  • Consolidated invoicing to the department

Tell us your roster size and what you have adopted

We will confirm what the protocol covers, in writing, before your department commits to anything.
